ON Monday, over 60 hair stylists attended the Lowe’s Wholesale Motions Hair Show 2008 at the Wyndham Nassau Resort & Crystal Palace Casino.

Loretta Francis, Marketing Coordinator at Lowe’s and organizer of the event, felt that the response was good given the current economic climate.

The show featured hairstylist and platform artist Roslyn Baker from Dallas, Texas who has over 25 years of experience in the industry; one of the reasons why Lowe’s chose her to showcase the latest hair styles and trends and also educate Bahamian stylists on how to use Motions products (hair care products produced specifically for those of African descent).

Apart from being a seasoned stylist, however, Ms. Baker was responsible for the launch of the multi-million dollar Soft & Beautiful Botanicals line and is presently employed as a consultant at Alberto Culver, a $1.4 billion manufacturer and marketer of beauty, personal care and household products, including Motions, in more than 120 countries around the globe.

In addition to the educational aspect of the show, Motions Hair Show 2008 also served as a way for Lowe’s to promote the Motions brand name.

According to Ms. Francis and Gloria Brown, Brand Manager for Alberto Culver, Motions is the number one hair care product in the Bahamian market (both in the retail and professional market).

Motions, which has been in the Bahamian market since the 1980’s is now a recognized and trusted name and Ms. Francis holds that this is the case because of the reasonable price and good quality of the product.

Throughout the day, door prizes were given out at the show which culminated with a Diva’s Ink Fashion Show.

Models for the Fashion and Hair Show were handpicked by Ms. Baker herself.

Dwayne Lamm, Managing Director of Yodephy Dance & Modeling Agency stated that about 20 models from the agency had a go-see with Ms. Baker and in the end 8 models were chosen while 2 were selected as back-ups.

Kayla Farqhuson a 23-year veteran in the hair care industry and a stylist at Clippendales said that the Motions Hair Shows were always worth it as they allowed her to keep current on the latest trends and were also good for networking with her colleagues.

She also felt that the hair show was great for stylists who were new to the hair care industry.

Karen Bethel, owner of Impressions Beauty Salon agreed with Kayla. In fact, she told BlackFood that the Motions Hair Show was getting better every year. Above all, she told us, “the hairstyles rock!”

Robert Russell the only male stylist in the audience said that he liked the new ideas that were shared at Motions Hair Show 2008 and most of all he liked learning about the new Motions products such as the Marula Natural Therapy line.

Given the audience feedback, the show, which will be held next in 2010, will be well worth the wait. ♦bf
