I can get mad at the African man,
Real pissed at him,
‘Cus of all of his flaws,
his wrongs,
his mistruths and bad deeds.
But for some reason,
I just can’t stay mad at the African man.
My fury subsides,
As I watch him,
Rising at dawn,
And settling down at midnight.
Working, working, working,
For us – the community.
He has very little,
Yet holds his head with dignity.
He has very little,
Yet has the respect of many.
He has very little,
Yet NEVER compromises.
He is always aware of his strength,
His power,
Of his ability to change his circumstance,
Our circumstance.
He dreams,
And never stops dreaming,
TALL dreams.
He rises above the negativity of our world.
He sees the many obstacles,
The many roadblocks,
That tell him not to be,
Too African,
Not too strong,
Not too self-assured.
He ignores obstacles,
And forges ahead.
Afraid,
But moving,
Oh so fearless.
He knows dark,
But has chosen light,
And gets up each day,
Tryin’ to live a life that’s right.
Always tryin’ to be the solution,
With that brilliant mind of his,
With that gentle spirit,
With that fighting spirit.
I love you,
AFRICAN MAN.♦bf
