About BlackFood
We saw the hunger, among Bahamian people, for expressions of African (black) culture. In fact, we too were hungry for books, magazines, journals, DVD’s, and paraphernalia that showcased our way of life – past and present; because we firmly believe that a people must know their roots in order to better understand their present and to plan for the future. Sadly, that craving could not be satisfied as there were hardly any stores or institutions on the island that paid homage to the history, triumphs, struggles, art, and music of Africans (blacks) throughout the Diaspora.
After much thought we decided to fill this void by creating a space where people of all beliefs, nationalities, ages and races can come together to share in African (black) traditions, in particular, and the culture of oppressed people worldwide, in general. As we believe that there is a common thread that unites those who struggle to exist and those who struggle to forge a new way in this current capitalist/imperialist system that pervades almost every aspect of our lives. And we hope to bring this commonality to light as we delve into the rich experiences of Africans worldwide.
BlackFood, therefore, aims to not only sell products that reflect the expressions of our culture but to also create a village where the sprits of love, unity, and revolution are ignited. Join us!

Charo R. Walker, Co-Owner
After completing high school in Nassau, The Bahamas in 1994 Charo was unsure of what path she would choose in life and decided to follow her love of history. She attended The College of The Bahamas (C.O.B) where she attained an Associates Degree in History. While at C.O.B. she was active in student government and served as Assistant Secretary of the College of The Bahamas Union of Students (C.O.B.U.S.). Her involvement with C.O.B.U.S. was a turning point and she decided to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Economics at Howard University (H.U.).
Her time spent at H.U. proved to be rich and fulfilling. Her interaction with African (black) people from across the Diaspora coupled with the African (black) based education she received opened her eyes to her place in the world. After H.U., she attended George Washington University and attained a Master’s Degree in International Trade and Investment Policy.
Shortly after graduation, she entered the world of international affairs and worked for organizations such as the Caribbean Regional Negotiating Machinery, the Organization of American States and The Bahamas Ministry of Foreign Affairs. She is now part of the struggle for total African liberation.
